- AUDREY GORDON - Mi
Assignment -
|
 |
Audrey's
sophomore album, Mi Assignment may not
add up to her debut album ..Still
Waiting in terms of length, but where
it falls short in length, it makes up
in weight.
With excellent writing skills,
terrific vocals which is reminiscent
of none other, and backing tracks that
compares to the likes of Sly and
Robbie, this artist is well on her way
to the top. |
Opening
her album with "Mi Assignment',
clearly shows that this artists is in
for the long haul. A unique song and
delivery.
When asked to explain the lyrics to
the song she says that, "There
comes a time when you have to get
yourself freed from people, while at
the same time not offending them or
God. The enemy uses your own people to
test you and bring you under, but
sometimes you have to stare the devil
in his face and stomp him out as his
mission is that you forfeit God's
purpose for you"
Re-visiting the same rhythm as Mi
Assignment, Audrey drops the bomb on
track two. Born Again Girl is indeed
one great track that stands out all on
its own. As a soca fan, I can hear
Gordon killing this song on a soca
rhythm as well.
Gordon speeds up the track a notch
here, which leaves you with a song to
really bounce to. It is well produced
with a catchy and mesmerizing beat.
The vocals are nicely done here too,
and should do well even on mainstream
media. Gordon collaborates with
synthesized "Girlie" which
is a unique and very clever idea that
I have not seen done on gospel
recordings prior to this.
We asked Audrey why this direction.
"The song was supposed to be done
by two females, she said, but at the
last minute the female singer could
not make it and I had already booked
the studio time, so I went to the
studio and knew I had to do some quick
changes to the song arrangement. I
decided to just sing all parts and
synthesize the voice there. I thought
of some names and Girlie popped into
my head. When the engineer made the
first change to the voice, I could not
believe how much it sounded like
Girlie. May his soul rest in peace.
And it was not even done on purpose
either, so we left it at that. People
have even asked me who the male DJ
is"
Born Again Girl is very well produced,
terrifically rendered and very well
written.
"One Man Woman", a hard
hitting song that was made popular by
Gem Myers in the '80. The song was a
huge hit. It was published by AGR
music out of Jamaica and the song
written by Asley Grub Cooper.
Audrey stated that the rhythm had
always appealed to her until she
finally decided to write a song on the
rhythm.
The publisher/owner of the song and
rhythm was contacted and Audrey's team
was granted permission to use the
track on some conditions. I believe
that those in the Gem Myers camp would
be very proud of this number as well
as the way she was able capture the Mi
Assignment track on the same rhythm.
You're Good, Yes, is soothing and very
appealing. It is one of my favorites
on the album. It brings a lingering
affect that Audrey’s songs are known
to do.
"Mark Giles who is the producer
wrote the first two verses and asked
me to add a third verse, so we share
writing credits. It is one of my
favorites too, she added"
Oh Zion is a traditional song that
Gordon has added portions to make a
lovely cover version. "While we
were still in the process of doing the
first two songs as a single release, I
woke up one morning with the song
"No One Cares For Me Like Jesus'
just going on in my head. It was so
strong and commanding that I could not
resist the urge to add it to the
album”.
That is how the record has become an
eleven track album. It was never
intended to be that way. I have songs
that I have written that I need to
record but I have not added any of
them to the album. All the songs on
this album are a spur of the moment
thing, it was nothing that was thought
through, it just ended up being this
way, which is good. I want to be
unpredictable too and be able to be
sensitive to the leading of the Holy
Spirit at all times, so if I am going
to do something and He decides to make
a change to another direction, I want
to be that flexible to follow"
None Like You is calming, soothing,
and simply beautiful. It is another
one of my favorites and Gordon rides
this rhythm with a self assured and
settled prowessness.
This is one of two rhythms that Gordon
has brought in from her debut album,
which shows her ability and
versatility to use a single rhythm
over and over to make different sounds
and vocal deliveries without becoming
redundant.
Gordon declares her love for her
savior on this track very candidly.
Here she speaks of His love and the
way He has meticulously orchestrated
the paths of her life and how
fearfully and wonderfully made she is.
This is a song for keeps and deserves
to be in everyone's library.
He is Born is a song about the birth
of Jesus Christ, with a very
infectious and catchy chorus line. It
will fit well around the Christmas
season as well as throughout the other
seasons of the year.
I Am Free, is Gordon's signature song
from her debut album and URS
compilation Vol. 1. Enough cannot be
said about this classic track.
Splendid, awesome, lovely, wonderful,
great only describes it that little
much.
Take a listen for yourself; it is one
of those Gospel songs that will last
until the end of time. Every time you
listen to it, it has a new freshness
to it, it never dies. Some songs lose
their luster after a time, but this
was made to last.
Welcome Medley is missing the
background vocals that these church
medleys are known for and would allow
Gordon to really shine on this track.
The vocal delivery however is top
notch here and will appeal to many
church audience as well as the secular
arenas.
On track 10, Your Grace and Mercy
Gordon lays down the vocals to this
number like a season veteran and
awesome worshipper.
A very convincing delivery and
heartfelt as is also evident
throughout the rest of the album..
Although my taste buds are not usually
towards the traditional numbers, I
must say Gordon nailed it here and has
caused me to appreciate the
traditional side of her even more. I
listened to this track numerous times
and each time continues to see a new
beauty in it.
Her versatility is to be noted. Jazz
and R&B are future genres that I
hope to hear Gordon deliver and I am
sure she will do quite well, even
though she has a great reggae voice.
Mega Mix recaps all the song on the
album, except Your Grace and Mercy.
This is a new and innovative way to
end an album…wrapping it up in fine
style.
THE PROS & CONS:
PROS: The album and artist will
certainly last and will find a place
among the best of reggae legendaries,
whether gospel or secular.
CONS: Short, in comparison to…Still
Waiting, but sweet.
